As part of library week in Term 3, Week 4, the Primary 5 pupils took on the role of storytellers, captivating the Primary 1 and 2 pupils while reading Kamishibai cards. Kamishibai, also known as paper play, is a form of storytelling that originates from Japan. Most Kamishibai stories consist of 12 or 16 large sturdy, beautifully illustrated cards.

Kamishibai is an excellent tool for Primary 5 pupils to develop their aural skills as well as introduces them to the art of storytelling. Some pupils even took up the challenge of creating their own Kamishibai cards. Our Primary 5 pupils certainly did a great job of painting the pictures with thousand words and keeping their audience engaged through facial expressions as well as dramatic voicing.

Through the congress, Mediacorp hopes that children will be empowered to speak up and contribute to society.

Together with some 200 children from various primary schools, the JTP pupils had the opportunities to interact and share their views on making their school experience joyful and meaningful. As part of the one-day congress, workshops and talks were also organised to develop self-confidence in the pupils. The Primary Two pupils had their Performance Day on 12 July 2012 – a showcase of their skills following eight weeks of speech and drama lessons and rehearsals. Our emphasis for this year was on choral reading to improve pupils’ reading skills and voice projection. We focused on poetry and folktales such as “The Thirsty Frog”, “The Iguana”, “My Shadow” and “The Bunyip Hunt”.

The different stories gave pupils a range of stories and poems to read and enjoy. We even had a rap cum dance item based on the poem, “My Shadow”. This provided pupils an opportunity to learn to modulate their voices according to the characters they were playing or the text that they were reading. The boys were enthusiastic about the performance as they had also put in a lot of effort and worked hard for the performance. Great work, boys!

The Primary One boys embarked on a learning journey to the Science Centre during the month of July.   The boys read the Big Book on Poggy Frog and the Cows this term where the theme of sharing was explored.  The story dwells on how Poggy Frog and his friends make the decision to share the pond with the cows.

In order to extend the lesson beyond the classroom, the boys embarked on a learning journey to the Science Centre after completing the Big Book. Here, Science came alive! The boys were squealing with delight as they had the opportunity to examine frogs and tadpoles in close proximity. The officers at Science Centre took our boys through lessons on comparison of frogs and toads. Our boys went on to study about the life cycle of a frog. The boys were totally engaged with all the hands-on sessions and group work. Learning was indeed very meaningful and lively.
